Ulrich Schmitz is a professor emeritus of German Philology and Language Didactics at the University of Duisburg-Essen. He studied German, English and Political Science in Tübingen, Exeter and Marburg, where he also gained his doctorate. He was a reporter and editor at Hessischer Rundfunk and worked as Akademischer Rat (academic counsellor) for German Philology at the University of Duisburg, where he also completed his habilitation. He has also taught in Duisburg, Salzburg, Koblenz and Bonn.
