Herbert Heitland taught as a professor at I.I.T-Madras (India) and at RWTH Aachen University from 1963 to 1967. From 1969 to 1985, he worked at Volkswagen AG as head of futurology, among other positions. From 1984 to 1989 he was, among other things, president of the European Council for Testing of Fuels and Lubricants, advisor to the nuclear research facility in Jülich, and expert to the Enquete Commission "Protection of the Earth's Atmosphere" of the German Bundestag. He has lectured at RWTH Aachen University and at the Institute of Vehicle Construction in Wolfsburg.
