Elke Axmacher studied Theology and German Philology in Berlin and Göttingen. In 1977 she stopped working as a teacher and started at Kirchliche Hochschule Berlin (Church University Berlin). She taught evangelical theology at Bielfeld University from 1994 to 2006. Her research focusses on the history of piety and lutheranism's spiritual poetry of lutheranism (especially by Paul Gerhardt).
