Elke Riemer-Buddecke studied German Philology, Philosophy, Art and Art History in Hamburg, Karlsruhe and Paris (research and doctoral scholarship from DFG). She gained her doctorate in Art History and German Philology. She has been fascinated by E.T.A. Hoffmann for a long time. Her book E.T.A. Hoffmann und seine Illustratoren was published as early as 1976 (a 2nd edition in 1978, both with Gerstenberg in Hildesheim). She also published several essays on the same subject.
