Felix Gartmann is a trained biological-agricultural-chemical laboratory technician. He studied biology at the University of Zurich and completed his doctorate in systematic botany on the ecology of arctic and high alpine ferns in Zurich's Botanical Garden. He was a science teacher at various vocational schools until he retired. Gartmann is married, has three grown-up children and lives in Uster (Switzerland).
