Gert Hellerich studied in Darmstadt, Berrien Springs, and Vienna. After receiving his doctorate from the University of Kansas in 1967, he conducted research at Yale University (1969–1971). His teaching career has ranged from Lambuth College (1967–1969) to Hochschule Bremen (1971–1988 as well as 1990–2004) to the University of Central Florida (1988–1990). He has also published extensively in journals and edited volumes.
