Maria Iliescu, Prof. Dr. dres. h.c., was an assistant at the University of Bucharest and a research associate at the Romanian Academy. In 1972 she was appointed full professor in Craiova. Since 1983 she has been a professor at the Institute for Romance Studies in Innsbruck - between 1988 and 1998 also in Trento. From 2007 to 2010 she was president of the Society for Romance Linguistics. Her research focuses on comparative Romance linguistics.
