Walter Werbeck studied School Music, Church Music and Piano at Hochschule für Musik in Detmold as well as history at the University of Bielefeld and Musicology at the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar Detmold/Paderborn. Doctorate in 1987, habilitation in 1995. He taught as a professor of Musicology with a focus on church music at the Institute for Church Music and Musicology at the University of Greifswald from 1999 to 2017.
