Jan Luiken

Jan Luiken (1649–1712) sorts the "human trades" according to their importance for human life: starting with the baker and the dress maker, followed by the house building and home care trades, the metal workers to the shipbuilders, the book and art trades, the farmer, the sailor and finally the interpersonal trades of the merchant, warrior and administrator (ruler). He drew 100 representatives of various trades and professions in their workshops and workrooms and - together with his son Caspar (1672-1708) - engraved them in copper according to these models. This depiction of "human activity" in general makes it clear that for him all professions are the purpose of life and fulfillment of existence, since they all follow the divine laws in which human life is realized.
