Julia Heilen is a teacher and researcher at the Oriental Institute of Leipzig University. During three semesters, she was a substitute professor at Friedrich Schiller University Jena. Her research focusses on the Maghreb's history, culture and politics (especially Morocco and the Imazighen) and on islamic law. She received her doctorate for a study on the development of criminal law norms in the Sultanate and Kingdom of Morocco, using sexual and immoral offences as examples. Together with Hans-Georg Ebert she wrote "Islamisches Recht. Ein Lehrbuch" (Islamic Law. A Textbook).
