Oliver Stoll studied Classical and Provincial Roman Archaeology, Ancient History, and Prehistory and Early History before earning his doctorate in Classical Archaeology and his habilitation in Ancient History. He has been a professor of ancient history in Passau since 2007. He conducts research on ancient military history, on the religious, social, economic and technological history of antiquity, and on the Roman provinces.
