Thede Kahl is a professor of South Slavic and Southeast European Studies at Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. During his studies he worked as a natural history tour guide. After receiving his doctorate in Geography (Münster 1999), he habilitated in Romance Philology (Vienna 2007), specializing in the minorities of Southeastern Europe and their languages.
