This volume brings together the proceedings of KLAARA 2025, a major international conference on Easy Language and accessible communication hosted at Riga’s University of Latvia in August 2025. It showcases research and practice from across Europe, illustrating how Easy Language supports participation, information rights, and inclusion in increasingly multilingual societies. The contributions span cultural institutions, public administration, media, education, and social services, with a strong emphasis on user-involved and co-creative approaches that view people not only as recipients but as experts in accessible communication, thereby underlining the growing importance of accessible communication in contemporary societies.

Editors

Chris Maaß is Professor of Media Linguistics at the University of Hildesheim, where she heads the Knowledge Lab Information Literacy and Accessibility, the Research Centre for Easy Language, and the Master’s programme “Accessible Communication”. 
Laura Marie Maaß is Professor of Social Work, Inclusive Education, and Inclusion at PFH Private University of Applied Sciences Göttingen and an interpreter for German Sign Language. 
Velga Polinska, PhD, is a research assistant at the Latvian Language Institute, University of Latvia. She serves on the board of the NGO “Down Syndrome Latvia” and co-edited the first Handbook of Easy Latvian, contributing to Easy Language and Disability Studies in Latvia.
